The Bengals are reportedly close to signing Larry Johnson as an “insurance policy” at running back:
Jay Glazer of FOX reports that the Bengals have decided to sign Johnson, and that the Bengals are attempting to work out a deal with the seven-year veteran.
For now, the potential move is being sold by coach Marvin Lewis as an insurance policy only, presumably to give the team a graceful (or, as the case may be, less ungraceful) way to introduce Johnson into the locker room without disrupting the existing chemistry.

It’s Friday the 13th and while we should probably have a photo of a black cat breaking a mirror or something, we’re going to look ahead to next week when the Leonid meteor shower peaks on Tuesday, November 17th. According to NASA:
If forecasters are correct, the shower should produce a mild but pretty sprinkling of meteors over North America followed by a more intense outburst over Asia. The phase of the Moon will be new, setting the stage for what could be one of the best Leonid showers in years.
“We’re predicting 20 to 30 meteors per hour over the Americas, and as many as 200 to 300 per hour over Asia,” says Bill Cooke of NASA’s Meteoroid Environment Office. “Our forecast is in good accord with independent theoretical work by other astronomers.”
Leonids are bits of debris from Comet Tempel-Tuttle. Every 33 years the comet visits the inner solar system and leaves a stream of dusty debris in its wake. Many of these streams have drifted across the November portion of Earth’s orbit. Whenever we hit one, meteors come flying out of the constellation Leo.
While it will probably be a pretty good meteor shower, it will have nothing on 1833, as this first-hand account of Great Leonid Meteor Storm of 1833 by Elder Samuel Rogers explains:
We had but little rest that night, for, before three o’clock in the morning, we were all aroused from our slumbers, making preparation for an early start. Some one, on looking out of the window, observed that it was almost broad daylight. “That can not be,” another answered, “For it is scarcely three o’clock.” “I can’t help what the clock says,” replied the first speaker, “my eyes can not deceive me; it is almost broad daylight –look for yourselves.”
After this little altercation, some one went to the door for the purpose of settling the question. Fortunately, there was not a cloud in the heavens; so by a glance, all was settled. I heard one of the children cry out, in a voice expressive of alarm: “Come to the door, father, the world is surely coming to an end.” Another exclaimed: “See! The whole heavens are on fire! All the stars are falling!” These cries brought us all into the open yard, to gaze upon the grandest and most beautiful scene my eyes have ever beheld. It did appear as if every star had left its moorings, and was drifting rapidly in a westerly direction, leaving behind a track of light which remained visible for several seconds.
Some of those wandering stars seemed as large as the full moon, or nearly so, and in some cases they appeared to dash at a rapid rate across the general course of the main body of meteors, leaving in their track a bluish light, which gathered into a thin cloud not unlike a puff of smoke from a tobacco-pipe. Some of the meteors were so bright that they were visible for some time after day had fairly dawned. Imagine large snowflakes drifting over your head, so near you that you can distinguish them, one from the other, and yet so thick in the air as to almost obscure the sky; then imagine each snowflake to be a meteor, leaving behind it a tail like a little comet; these meteors of all sizes, from that of a drop of water to that of a great star, having the size of the full moon in appearance: and you may then have some faint idea of this wonderful scene.

My predictions were fairly spot on in my last installment, so here once again, are my predictions for the upcoming UFC event, UFC 10: Couture vs. Vera. Again these predictions are NOT guesses, I am an ex fighter, a martial arts and MMA instructor, I am well qualified to make predictions on the sport.
The best part about UFC 105, is that it’s free on spike TV, so there’s no excuses for missing it!
UFC 105: Couture vs. Vera
Saturday, November, 14th, 2009
MEN arena, Manchester England
Undercard fights:
Aaron Riley vs Ross Pearson – Riley is coming off of a decision victory over Shane Nelson and Pearson is coming off of two wins, one via submission and one via decision. Pearson is a dangerous figheter, but Riley has a bit more experience under his belt. Both men like submissions and have a majority of their victories by way of submission.
I’m giving this fight to Riley though, I think he has better stand up and that’s what this fight is coming down too. Riley by TKO round 2.
Mike Swick vs. Dan Hardy – Swick is a phenom and is coming off of four big wins, Hardy off six big wins. Both of these fighters LOVE to stand up and slug it out, so it is for sure a fight to watch. Hardy has fought a lot overseas, whereas Swick has been in front of the limelight since his debut on the ultimate fighter reality show in America.
I give this fight to Swick, mainly because he has fought more “known” fighters in the US. Swick round 1 TKO.
Headliners:
Michael Bisping vs. Dennis Kang – WOW, talk about a hard fight to call! Neither fighter has any glaring weaknesses, but Bisping is coming off of a loss by way of Dan Henderson while Kang is coming off of a decision victory. Kang is a virtual unknown to many, but his record and who he has fought (and defeated) speaks for itself.
Bisping is the winner of the ultimate fighter reality show, and has been a name stay since. Both men can stand up and bang, but Kang has a huge advantage on the ground, which is where I think this fight will go. I’m giving this one to Kang, by submission in round 3.
Randy Couture vs. Brandon Vera – Couture is making his comeback, this time in the light-heavyweight division, after two big loses to Nogueira and Lesnar. Vera is coming off of two big wins, his last by decision over Krzysztof Soszynsk. Considering the caliber of talent Couture has fough, as opposed to Vera, this almost seems like a tune up fight for Couture.
Make no mistake, Vera has a good chance of winning, but Couture has been there and done that in the sport. Couture has excellent striking and wrestling, Vera has great muay thai and submissions, which makes this fight a tough call.
If Couture keeps it on his feet (Which he can!), he will still need to contend with Vera’s deadly knees and strikes. Couture will NOT be a stepping stone however, Couture is more seasoned and ring savy and is afraid to fight NO one. I really think this was intended to be a tune up fight to get Couture back in the saddle, but Vera is also no stepping stone.
I see this fight going the distance with Couture coming out on top!

Overall, I thought Taylor Swift did a pretty good job last night as both the host, and musical act on Saturday Night Live.
The opening monologue was a little goofy but the skits involving Kate Gosselin and Twilight (for those of you who love Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart) were actually pretty funny.
I was a little surprised at the lack of reference to the Kanye West incident because there were some great opportunities for sketches, but I’ll survive
What did you think of her performance?
From the Wall Street Journal:
Taylor took the stage for the opening monologue in a glittery black dress and, playing a guitar, performed a comic tune called “Monologue Song (La La La).” In the number, she took a lyrical swipe at Joe Jonas, her ex-boyfriend, and sang “and if you’re wondering if I might/ be dating the werewolf from “Twilight”/ I’m not going to comment on that in my monologue.”
The singer appeared in a segment sending up “The View”-she played guest host Kate Gosselin, complete with the reality mom’s famously asymmetrical hairdo. “My hairdresser was halfway through giving me ‘The Rachel’ when his blowdryer exploded on the back of my head,” Swift as Gosselin said, explaining the genesis of her hairstyle.
Swift appeared in a lot of skits, and she had her moments in most of them. She had a funny, crazy laugh in a bit about being interviewed by manipulative celebrity reporters. In another segment she played a teen, fed up with all the talk about “Driving While Texting,” who starts campaigning against the dangerous things that parents do, including “Driving While Arguing with the GPS” and “Driving While Singing Along To a Song You Don’t Know the Lyrics To.”

It takes a lot of balls to be a freshmen from K-State and make a prediction that you’re going to sweep your rival Kansas, especially when you haven’t beaten them on your OWN home floor since 1984 (literally!). But that’s what Michael Beasley did. Homey said that his Kansas State squad would sweep KU this year and you know what, they’re half way there.
Credit where credit is due because Mike scored a game high 25 en route to a relatively smooth 84-75 win over the #2 ranked Kansas Jayhawks. Now let me tell you and I know this because I watch College Basketball, Kansas is DEAD NICE this year. I mean, they’re stacked with athletes and ballers from the rooter to the tooter in that line-up and really should not lose to K-State, period. Yes I know that K State has Bill Walker and Mike Beasley, but Kansas has Brandon Rush, Mario Chalmers, Sherron Collins, Darrell Arthur and Sasha Kaun, just to name a few!! I don’t know man, Bill Self is a good coach and he gets guys to come to his school, but at some point homey is going to have to be held to a higher standard.
Let’s be clear, homey’s teams have choked like a mother, catching TWO first round losses and losing to random Big 12 teams like it aint no thang. I know this was their first loss and all, but you guys got to shake that “waiting for an upset” reputation and it aint gonna get done by letting a freshmen call you out and then embarrass you in a rivalry game.
Gut check time fellas..
- Lake
